Filipinos celebrate Philippine Independence Day in Dubai

Hundreds of Filipinos flocked to the Dubai World Trade Center on Saturday (June 25) to celebrate Philippine Independence Day.

The Philippine Independence Day falls on June 12, but this year’s event in Dubai was scheduled at a later date in observance of the 40-day mourning period for the late UAE president Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan.

Saturday’s event in Dubai kicked off with a parade of various Filipino groups in the UAE, many proudly waving Philippine flaglets. The event was graced by Philippine Ambassador to the UAE Hjayceelyn Quintana, Philippine Consul General Renato Dueñas Jr., Community Development Authority officials, as well as embassy and consulate staff. Several people wore traditional Philippine attire, including the barong and saya. Contestants of the Mutya ng Kalayaan pageant also regaled the crowd with their elaborate costumes.

The day-long event is being held at the Zabeel Hall 2 until 7pm, and features activities and a bazaar with many brands giving away gifts and other prizes. It is organized by the Filipino Social Club.
