Ely Buendia, best known as the lead vocalist in the famous rock band Eraserheads, shared with Expatmedia.net his inspiration for writing Huling El Bimbo.
Released in 1996, Huling El Bimbo is one of the hit classic songs composed by Ely Buendia that catapulted the band’s success, for which they have received international awards. The song maintained its popularity until the present since it became the featured song of one of the most popular jukebox musicals in the Philippines, Ang Huling El Bimbo.
In an exclusive interview with the singer, Buendia shared with Expatmedia.net what his goals were for writing the song.
“I wanted to tell a story about parts of my childhood. I wanted it to be epic, so it’s a very long song. I also wanted it to be very emotional and passionate,” he said.
Huling El Bimbo was initially performed by rock bands when Dingdong Novenario, a composer, adapted the song into a staged musical that premiered in 2018 and will have its musical remake in April 2023.
“Ang Huling El Bimbo” Musical centered on the tale of four friends growing up and navigating life, which made it “more significant” to the millennials.
“It’s a great feeling to have your music translated into another medium like the theater because I am a theater fan. I love musicals, and the way they did it was very well-made,” Buendia said.
After being asked to suggest other songs for a staged musical, Buendia suggested another studio album of the Eraserheads, the Fruitcake.
“It’s a Christmas album. It is a musical in itself -our mini-musical, so I would like it to be staged by someone,” he said.
Buendia recently performed in Dubai for his “legendary concert 2023 at Shabab Al Ahli Club in Al Qusais on February 4. Last year, he performed at Expo 2020 in Dubai, together with singers Arthur Nery and Gigi de Lana. RZSP/Expat Media
