Expat Media, USJ-R mark second year of MoU on internship programme for students

The University of San Jose-Recoletos (USJ-R) and Dubai-based media company Expat Media marked the second year of its memorandum of agreement to offer an internship programme to students.

Expat Media’s internship programme with USJ-R, one of the top universities in the Philippines, provides training in news and feature writing, news editing and news publishing for digital newsrooms, as well as digital marketing.

Graduating college students taking up Journalism and Communication in USJ-R are accepted into the training program.

The MoU for the internship program, which began in January 2022, was signed by Expat Media COO and Editor-in-Chief Florence Pia G. Yu and Dr. Mila Mae Caballero, chairperson of USJ-R’s Department of Journalism and Communication.

“Interns undergo practical training for up to 180 days, depending on the semestral requirement. Once they complete their training, students are given a certificate, as well as rewards for Best Story, Best Social Media Content, among other editorial awards,” Yu said.

“It is our pleasure to train and guide future journalists to become informed voices in the media industry. It is part of our mission and outreach at Expat Media,” Yu added.

Caballero, for her part, lauded the partnership with Expat Media. “We are confident that with the on-the-job training with Expat Media, our students can gain practical knowledge that will help equip them for the ever evolving media and information sector.”

Established in 2016, Expat Media Group has received several recognitions for its work with government agencies in the UAE and the Philippines. Its news division includes Expatmedia.net and the Expat Media Special Edition magazine. The media group also has a PR division and events management division.

Expat Media’s top editors are recipients of the Journalism Awards in Dubai, presented by Sheikh Majid bin Mohammad bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Chairman of Dubai Culture and Arts Authority.

Editor-in-Chief Yu is a two-time recipient of award, along with Expat Media’s CEO and Executive Editor Mars Yabut De los Santos. Both editors are alumnae of USJ-R.

USJ-R, then Colegio de San Jose-Recoletos, was founded in 1947 by the Order of Augustinian Recollects. It has three campuses in Cebu City and sister schools University of Negros Occidental-Recoletos in Bacolod, San Sebastian College-Recoletos in Manila and Cavite, and Universitaria Agustiniana in Colombia.
