Here is a list of things you probably did not know could get you in big trouble:

10. Picking a fight at the station or on the train. Causing a public disturbance will earn you a fine of AED100 and quite possibly some scratches or a black eye (not to mention the dent to your ego).

9. Putting your feet up on the seats. Seriously, where are your manners? If you don’t know this is rude, then at least know that if you do this on the Metro you’ll be fined AED100.

8. Hanging out at Metro stations. Standing or sitting in non-passenger areas is not allowed and if you are caught, better get your AED100 ready.

7. Using Dubai Metro parking areas as your personal parking spot. Parking your vehicle in areas designated for metro users for more than 24 hours will earn you a fine of AED100 per day and up to AED1,000.

6. Hide those kakanins and don’t even think about passing around those leaflets. Selling or promoting goods and commodities on the train or at the station is prohibited. Offenders will be fined AED200.

5. Ignoring inspectors or instructions of authorized Roads and Transport Authority personnel. They are just doing their job so treat them with courtesy (unless you think they’re being unnecessarily rude, then file a complaint because courtesy goes both ways). There’s a AED200 price tag for your snub.

4. Sleeping. Yes, if you’re caught in the land of nod on the train or anywhere at the Metro station, then you are sure to wake up to a fine of AED300.

3. Using a fake card. Forging a card may cost you nothing, except probably your conscience, your honor and a very genuine AED500 when you are caught.

2. Packing up a survival kit for The Walking Dead. Yes, you will need those weapons or sharp objects just in case a horde of zombies come running your way, but you don’t need them on the Metro. Unless you want to get fined a hefty AED1,000.

1. Dressing in drag. Two cross-dressing Filipinos were caught by police at a Dubai Metro station. The duo were jailed for a month and then deported. Don’t let this happen to you.

Malek Jaziri plays last game of his career

Tunisian Malek Jaziri played the last game of his career following his first-round exit at the Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships on Monday (February 27).

The 39-year-old, a Pan Arab Games gold medallist with a career spanning 20 years, lost to Alejandro Fokina of Spain 6-2, 6-0 on Centre Court before saying goodbye to an appreciate crowd.

Jaziri had been granted a wildcard to play in this year’s tournament, an event he has appeared at 10 times and become a firm fan favourite by reaching the semi-finals in 2018.

On Monday, he started well, holding serve twice and leading 40-15 in his third service game, but his opponent – ranked World No.31 – fought back to break. Jaziri never won another game as Fokina closed out the set before delivering the Tunisian a bagel for the match.

“He played a good game and was much better physically for sure,” Jaziri said. “I’m not in my best shape, so he tried to make me move a little bit.”

Jaziri was determined to play his last professional game in front of his fans at the Dubai Duty Free Tennis Stadium, and thanked Tournament Director Salah Tahlak for making it happen. A finalist at Istanbul in 2018, his run to the final four in Dubai saw him beat the likes of Grigor Dimitrov and Stefanos Tsitsipas before losing to eventual winner Roberto Bautista Agut. He also faced Roger Federer here in 2013; Novak Djokovic in 2016; and Andy Murray in 2017.

“Dubai is a special place for me and a place where I have a lot of good memories,” he said. “That’s why I wanted to finish here in Dubai. I played most of the World No.1s here, most of the tournament’s No1 seeds, all these flashbacks came to me today.”

Reflecting on an illustrious career in which he flew the flag for the Arab World, became the first Tunisian to reach a ATP Tour semi-final, and achieved a career-high world ranking of No.42, said he has no regrets.

“I wanted to be in the top 100,” Jaziri said. “I never had anyone before me to say I want to be top 20, top 10 or No. 1. I dreamt only to be top 100 and I made top 50, so I made it. I did everything by myself.” ICA/Expat Media
