As part of an ongoing crackdown, the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has impounded 225 vehicles used as carlifts or illegal taxis in Dubai.

According to the RTA, it conducted inspections in collaboration with Dubai Police, Dubai Airport Security and Emirate Parking.

At least 49 vehicles were impounded in Jebel Ali were drivers were offering cheaper rides to construction workers. At Dubai International Airport, authorities impounded at least 90 vehicles used as carlifts. Violators were also fined for “passenger smuggling”.

In Dubai, carrying out an illegal taxi service is punishable with a fine of up to Dh50,000 for companies and up to Dh30,000 for individuals.

“The campaign is part of the plan to ensure safety of passengers and discourage illegal transport operators,” said Saeed Al Balooshi, Director of Passenger Transport Activities Monitoring at RTA’s Public Transport Agency. He urged the public to only use licensed transport services for their safety. ICA/Expat Media
