Dubai rolls out passport-free travel system

DUBAI – The next time you are at the Dubai airport, expect a contactless journey without even having to show your passport, just your face.

The new “smart travel system” using facial and iris recognition technology was unveiled at the General Directorate of Residency and Foreigners Affairs (GDRFA) on Monday (February 22).

The system had been on trial run in the last three months. “In Dubai, your passport becomes your face. Within seconds, passengers can check-in and walk through the smart gates. You don’t even need to show your boarding pass or passport before stepping into the aircraft,” said Brigadier Talal Ahmad Al Shanqiti, Assistant General Director of Ports Affairs in GDRFA-Dubai.

The integrated biometric contactless pathway allows passengers to complete immigration formalities, and check in and board flights without having to show their travel documents.

The contactless travel system simply scans travelers’ faces. Passengers need to be pre-registered and above the age of 17 in order to use the biometric pathway.

Brigadier Talal Ahmad Al Shanqeti, General Director assistant of Ports Affairs in GDRFA – Dubai, said 122 smart gates in the departure and arrival halls of Dubai Airports have been upgraded to the smart system.

Non-registered users can continue to use their Emirates IDs or passports at the smart gates.
