DUBAI – A shipment of cocaine worth more than Dh500 million has been seized in Dubai during a raid of a cargo container.
Dubai Police said the operation is considered the region’s largest drug seizure and led to the arrest of a Middle Eastern gang member operating in the UAE.
Brigadier Eid Mohammed Thani Hareb, Director of Anti-Narcotics Department at Dubai Police, said they had placed the suspect under close surveillance before they raided his property.
The narcotics were found within the structure of a cargo container following Dubai Police’s operation called “Op Scorpion”.
“We received a security tip on an international drug syndicate attempting to smuggle a huge amount of pure cocaine hidden in a cargo container into a seaport with the assistance of a Middle Eastern accomplice in the emirate,” Brigadier Hareb revealed.
The official said that police monitored the suspect’s movements until he received the shipment of narcotics, which he transported and stored in a warehouse in another emirate.
Colonel Khalid bin Muwaiza, Deputy Director of the General Department of Anti-Narcotics, said the suspect rented an SUV and bought tools to unload the container.
The suspect was caught in the act and had confessed to the crime. Investigation further revealed that he has a criminal record in the UAE.
The case has been referred to the Public Prosecution for further legal action. ICA/Expat Media
