The police force shares essential tips that will help you stay ahead of scammers and protect yourself from their schemes:
1. Be wary of unsolicited communications
Unsolicited calls and messages requesting personal or financial information should raise a red flag. Genuine entities do not seek sensitive data through unsolicited communication channels.
2. Verify the source independently
Before divulging any information or making payments, independently verify the identity of the caller or sender. Rely on official websites and contact details rather than relying solely on information provided in the message.
3. Safeguard your personal information
Refrain from sharing personal or banking details, online banking passwords, or ATM security numbers (CCV) with anyone. Legitimate institutions never ask for such information through unsolicited communication.
4. Exercise caution with tempting offers
Fraudsters often dangle tempting offers or discounts to entice victims. Be wary of deals that appear too good to be true, particularly if they require upfront payments.
5. Scrutinize website URLs
When conducting online transactions, ensure the website’s URL is accurate and secure. Look for “https://” and a padlock icon in the address bar, indicating a secure connection.
6. Guard your online information
Be prudent about sharing personal details on social media platforms. Seemingly innocuous information can be used by scammers to craft more convincing schemes.
7. Approach job offers with skepticism
Job offers demanding payment for recruitment or promising instant employment should be met with caution. Research the company and validate the authenticity of the job posting before taking any action.
8. Thoroughly research before making payments
Prior to making online payments or purchases, conduct thorough research on the seller or platform. Read reviews, verify physical addresses and contact details, and ensure the website’s credibility.
9. Report suspicious activity
If you encounter suspicious calls, messages, or websites, promptly report them to local authorities or relevant regulatory bodies. Timely reporting aids in preventing others from falling victim to the same scams.
10. Spread awareness
Stay informed about the latest scam tactics and educate your friends and family on how to identify and avoid them. Raising awareness is a powerful tool in the fight against fraud.
