World-champion Brian Grubb towed by drone as he wakeskates, jumps off Dubai rooftop pool

US wakeskating pioneer and three-time world champion Brian Grubb performed a unique stunt that saw him wakeskate on a rooftop pool in Dubai as he is towed by a drone, before jumping off the high-rise.

The combination of Wakeskating and BASE jumping had never been attempted before this, and Grubb’s jaw-dropping feat was performed at the Address Beach Resort in Dubai and its Guinness World Record-holding infinity pool situated 294 meters above sea level.

Grubb began wakeskating across the rooftop pool was he was towed by a drone, and as he reached the pool’s edge, he then jumped off, descending about 77 storeys before landing on the beach below.

The stunt completed Grubb’s seven-year dream to perform a WakeBASE, the combination of wakestaking and BASE jumping.

“I wanted to be the first person to do a combination Wakeskating switch into BASE jump and push myself to the highest level in my sports. I’ve had this idea for seven years, and not a day goes by when I’m not thinking about it,” Grubb explained.

“It’s been a long time coming, we had to build a drone that could pull us and I had to get more proficient in BASE jumping. Then we found this awesome location in Dubai and I just pulled off the sickest thing I’ve ever done on a wakeskate,” he added.

To prepare for the feat, Grubb completed 106 jumps during his training in places like the US and Switzerland.

Grubb’s WakeBASE project represents the peak of over 20 years of wakeskating and 15 years of skydiving. He has wakeskated around the world, including Jordan’s Wadi Al Hidan canyon and Turkey’s Cleopatra pool. ICA/Expat Media
