An Arab woman who took Dh350,000 from her fiancé in preparation for their wedding party has been ordered to pay back the money after the man found out that she was already married to another man.
The Al Ain Court of First Instance found the Arab woman guilty of tricking her ex-fiancé and ordered her to return the money to him because it was not used for what it was intended.
Official court records state that the man’s case seeks that the woman returns the money he paid to her account after their engagement and pay him another Dh20,000 as compensation for his damages.
The man recounted that he had met the woman over social media and had proposed to her after a year of communication.
He deposited Dh350,000 into her bank account after the woman accepted his proposal and requested money to start planning the wedding.
He claimed he had grown suspicious when his fiance put off planning their engagement celebration.
At that point, he started looking into it and soon discovered that the woman had been lying to him about being single and was actually married to another man.
The man claimed that she refused despite his requests for her to return his money.
This compelled him to file a lawsuit against her. He also produced records of their WhatsApp conversations and bank transfers.
The woman claimed that the man’s money was a gift and that she did not steal it in court. However, according to the three witnesses that the guy produced, the money was intended to fund their wedding party, which never took place because the woman was already married to another man for more than a year and a half.
After hearing from all parties, the judge ordered the woman to pay back the man’s money and to pay him another Dh6,000 in damages. BKM/ Expat Media
