UAE: Got a car emergency in middle of the road? Do this to save your life and avoid fines

Stopping your vehicle in the middle of the road can lead to serious accidents and fines, UAE police have repeatedly warned motorists.

In a fresh advisory on Tuesday (March 26), the Abu Dhabi Police reiterated a fresh warning on the dangers of stopping one’s vehicle in the middle of the road, saying it can cause “serious accidents and lead to traffic obstruction”.

Under the UAE traffic law, stopping in the middle of the road is punishable with a Dh1,000 fine and six black points in the driver’s licence. In case the act leads to a serious accident or injury, then the fine will be decided by the court, and the driver will be given 23 black points in his or her driver’s licence and the vehicle will be impounded for 30 days.

The police force said that motorists whose vehicles have broken down or are involved in accidents in the middle of the road must head to the nearest emergency lane or exit to maintain the safety of road users.

According to Abu Dhabi Police, in case of inability to move the vehicle, the driver must contact the Command and Control Centre of the Operations Room on hotline 999 to receive support.

“Drivers must avoid sitting in the broken down vehicle or standing on the road and must quickly call the emergency phone to seek help,” said Brigadier Mahmoud Yousef Al Balushi, Director of the Directorate.

He said that motorists can use the right shoulder of the road only “in cases of extreme necessity” and activate the four-way warning signals.

He also said it is important to place the reflective emergency triangle behind the broken down vehicle at a sufficient distance to alert other drivers. ICA/Expat Media
