UAE: Giant hailstones in Al Ain as rain hits Dubai, Abu Dhabi, other emirates

Hail fell overnight in Al Ain on Tuesday (April 16), with residents reporting giant hailstones in the Al Quaa area as rain of varying intensities swept across the rest of the emirates.

Rain of varying intensities was reported in Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Sharjah, Fujairah and Ras Al Khaimah, causing flooding on several roads.

The National Centre of Meteorology (NCM) has forecast rain across the country to persist until Wednesday (April 17), prompting authorities to announce that schools and government institutions will switch to remote work on Tuesday.

Hail in Al Ain

In Al Quaa, south of Al Ain city, residents reported experiencing hail, with giant hailstones damaging cars.

Airport advisory

Dubai International Airport (DXB) has issued an advisory for residents and tourists to check their latest flight status with their airlines amid worsening weather conditions. DXB also advised travelers to factor in traffic delays in their travel time to the airport.

The weather bureau has confirmed thunderstorms and lightning over key airports in Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Sharjah and Fujairah.

Beaches and parks closed

Authorities in Abu Dhabi, Dubai, Sharjah and Ras Al Khaimah authorities have announced the closure of all public parks and beaches, adding that they will be reopened when weather conditions improve. ICA/Expat Media
