DUBAI – The UAE has developed a rapid laser test that can reportedly identify Covid-19 patients in seconds.
The new technology can be used for mass screenings and aims to replace the current swab and blood tests that take several hours to process.
The device is developed by QuantLase Imaging Lab, the medical research arm of International Holdings Company.
The new technology claims to identify carriers before they become infectious, which may be crucial in containing the virus.
“Our laser-based [diffractive phase interferometry] technique, based on optical-phase modulation, is able to give a signature of infection within a few seconds,” said Abdulrahman Al Owais, Minister of Health and Prevention.
Al Owais said the device is also “user-friendly, non-invasive and low-cost”.
The official said the new technology will be a “game changer” in tackling the spread of coronavirus, and can be used in offices, hospitals and even homes.
The diagnostic system is powered by artificial intelligence and can produce results with high accuracy.
