UAE: Applying for International Driving Permit with a UAE license

The International Driving Permit (IDP) is a translation of your national driving license that allows you to drive in other countries without taking additional examinations or application papers.

Most countries require visitors to have an IDP if they wish to drive outside of the country that issued their license.

Some car rental companies accept your local license at their discretion, while others may require an IDP and would likely refuse a rental if you cannot comply with the document.

It is vital to remember that an IDP is only a supplementary document and not a replacement for your national driving license.

Here’s how to apply:

There are various options to acquire an IDP in the UAE. However, one should process the application prior to the departure.

All IDPs are only valid for one year and should be processed for renewal on a regular basis.

You can obtain your IDP through:

  • Automobile and Touring Club of the UAE (ATCUAE), which has offices in all seven emirates, or you can visit the website and have it delivered
  • Ministry of Interior mobile application
  • Emirates Post offices
  • Dnata office, Sheikh Zayed Road, Dubai

Upon processing, applicants will be required to fill in an application form online or in person.

One should also submit a copy of the following documents: a valid Emirates ID, passport and residency status, UAE driving license, and two passport photos.

Online applications will be processed within three working days of receipt therefore, it will take about five working days for all online applications to be sent to your selected address.

Over-the-counter applications, on the other hand, can be completed in less than 30 minutes.

International Driving Permits can cost about Dh170 plus tax. BKM/ Expat Media
