DUBAI – Defending champion Simona Halep has withdrawn from the Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships, organisers have announced.
Halep was looking forwarding to defending her title, but has withdrawn due to a lower back complaint.
“Unfortunately I am not feeling 100 per cent in my lower back, and I have made the tough decision to withdraw from the 2021 Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships,” she said.
Halep was due to compete in Dubai for the eighth time.
“I have great memories from winning my 20th WTA title after some really tough matches in Dubai last year so I’m disappointed that I won’t be able to defend my title,” she said.
The Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships will run from March 7 to 20, beginning with the WTA 1000 competition from March 7 to 13.
The WTA event will feature a fantastic field of 56 of the world’s best players. It will be followed by the ATP 500 tournament, taking place from March 14 to 20. ICA/Expat Media
