A Filipino injured in the Sharjah residential building fire that also killed his wife and four other people is recovering in the hospital.

Angeles and consulate officials extended their condolences and support during the visit to the surviving spouse of the fire victim. They also offered assistance in the documentation required to repatriate his wife’s remains to the Philippines.

Asking for anonymity, the Filipino said that their apartment was situated on the same floor where the fire broke out in the 38-storey residential building in Al Nahda area.

He has been working in the UAE in the last seven years. He said that his wife migrated to the UAE two years ago to join him.

The Filipina was one of five people killed in the blaze on Thursday (April 4). Among the dead were an Indian man and woman, a Bangladeshi man and a Kenyan man who jumped to his death from the burning high-rise. The fire also injured 44 people and displaced more than 150 people.

On Monday, it was revealed that a newly wed Indian couple also suffered the same fate as the Filipino couple. The Indian Consulate in Dubai confirmed that a 29-year-old Indian woman from Mumbai was killed, while her husband is in critical condition at a hospital.

Initial investigation revealed that the fire started in the electrical transformers in the upper floors. Investigation also revealed that the fire spread rapidly to the upper floors due to waste materials lying in the hallways. ICA/Expat Media
