Rent scam in Dubai: Fake villa owner jailed for taking Dh135,000 from Arab

A 38-year-old Asian man in Dubai is now in jail for scamming an Arab man of Dh135,000 that he took as deposit for a villa that he did not own.

According to police, the Asian expat has victimized other people using the same modus. His crime was exposed after his Arab victim reported him to the police.

Records showed that the Asian had posted ads about the villa in Al Twar available for rent for Dh235,000.

The Arab victim said that after seeing the ad, he contacted the man who claimed that he owned the villa.

They later met for a villa inspection and the Asian expat was accompanied by a male accomplice. After inspecting the villa, the Arab victim issued two cheques worth Dh100,000 and cash of Dh135,000.

Upon handover of the property, however, the Asian man could no longer be contacted. The Arab victim soon found out that the Asian man did not own the property.

The victim then alerted police, who tracked and arrested the Asian man. His accomplice remains at large.

The case was taken to court and judges found the Asian man guilty. The court ruled that he will be deported after serving his jail sentence. ICA/Expat Media
