DAVAO CITY – President-elect Rodrigo Duterte blamed the misuse of public funds as the reason for “so much misery” in the Philippines, saying that it is costing the country up to 2 billion pesos per day.
In a speech at his thanksgiving party in Davao City on Saturday (June 4), Duterte named the Bureau of Customs and the Bureau of Internal Revenue (BIR) as two government agencies where misuse of public funds is rampant.
“You know there is so much misery in our country today. [What hurts is] we have the money. If we just collect it and spend it correctly,” he said.
“Dito sa (Bureau of) Customs on any given day we are losing about 300 million (pesos). [It’s almost the same with] BIR. Actually we are losing about 1 to 2 billion (pesos) a day,” he added.
