An African man and woman who were part of a massage scam in Dubai have been sentenced to three years in jail and fined Dh28,000 after being convicted of assault and theft.
The duo will be deported after serving their jail term, according to the Dubai Criminal Court in its verdict.
The case dates back to July 2022 when an Asian man told police that he was stripped of his clothes, assaulted and robbed at a fake massage centre in Dubai.
The victim said he was lured by an ad on WhatsApp that promised a blonde masseuse for the job. When he visited the centre, he said that there were only African women inside.
He said that as soon as he entered the massage room, he was attacked by four African women who stripped him of his clothes, and took a photo of him as he was naked.
He said that the women also forced him to hand over his ATM card, which he initially left in his car but was later fetched by one of the assailants. He said that the group tortured him to get the pin code.
The victim said that he was locked in the room for several hours until the African man and the women returned to allow him to leave, but not before warning him that his video will be posted on social media if he complained to authorities.
He said that the group withdraw Dh28,000 from his ATM. He reported the incident to the police, who launched an investigation.
Police were able to identify and track the African group and arrest the man and his female partner. The court acquitted two other women due to lack of evidence. ICA/Expat Media
