MANILA – Philippine boxing icon and senator Manny Pacquiao announced on Sunday (September 19) his candidacy in the presidential elections in 2022.
Pacquiao accepted the nomination of the PDP Laban political party. In a Pulse Asia survey, Pacquiao ranked 5th among preferred presidential candidates in May.
“It is now the time for the oppressed to win. It is now the time for our nation to rise from poverty. It is now the time for a clean government where every centavo goes to Filipino,” Pacquiao told the PDP Laban assembly.
PDP Laban members have agreed to give Pacquiao authority to choose his running mate, as well as his Senate slate.
Pacquiao’s nomination came after a faction of the PDP Laban nominated Senator Bong Go as its presidential candidate and Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte as its vice-presidential bet. Go has said he will not run for president.
The factions of the PDP-Laban political party will have to await a decision by the Commission on Elections on which camp will be recognized for the 2022 elections. CAM/Expat Media
