Lani Misalucha on losing something ‘very important’ and New Day

DUBAI – Lani Misalucha will be back on stage this weekend to prove not even a disability could stop the Asia’s Nightingale from giving the best musical performance of her life.

Misalucha has been living with partial hearing loss after she and her husband contracted bacterial meningitis last October.

“Parang tinganggalan ka ng bagay na napaka importante syo (It’s like something very important to you has been taken away),” she told in a virtual interview for New Day, a virtual concert she will headline with legendary singer Martin Nievera on June 5 and 6. Watch the full interview:

“I felt so devastated,” Misalucha said, adding that it’s a difficult problem for singers to experience hearing loss.

“There was a time when I tried to listen to music a few weeks after going out of the hospital, [I only heard high pitches]. All the instruments sounded garbled,” she recalled.

“It was really weird. It was crazy. It almost made me crazy,” Misalucha told

While she feels that her condition has slightly improved in the last few months, she still finds it challenging to distinguish tones and pitches.

“For now, I am retraining myself how to listen to music with only one ear,” she said.

She doesn’t know when the partial hearing loss is going away. “Even the doctors can’t give us a definite answer,” she said.

Her vision has also been affected. “I still cannot drive because any movement will affect my vision,” she said.

“I have a hard time reading a teleprompter. But what can I do? I’m just gonna have to live with it for now,” she said. “If it’s going to be here for the rest of my life, just have to accept it.” PIA/Expat Media
