Did you know that there is also a Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque in Indonesia?

The iconic Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque has become one of the landmarks in Abu Dhabi, but in 2022, a version of the mosque was opened to the public in Solo, Indonesia.

Throughout Ramadan, the UAE will be sending 10,000 iftar meals every day to the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque in Indonesia, upon the directives of Sheikh Hamdan bin Zayed Al Nahyan, the Ruler’s Representative in Al Dhafra Region and Chairman of Emirates Red Crescent.

So, what is the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque in Indonesia and how similar is it to the original?

The mosque in Solo, Central Java, is a smaller replica of the original mosque in Abu Dhabi, but both are named after the UAE’s founding father Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan.

The Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque in Indonesia is a gift from UAE President Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, who inaugurated it alongside Indonesian President Joko Widodo last November 14, 2022. Sheikh Mohamed offered the $20 million mosque as a gift to Indonesia during his trip to the country in 2019.

The replica mosque, which is about one-fifth the size of the original mosque, sits on three hectares of land. It has four minarets and a main dome surrounded by four smaller domes. The mosque has Indonesian details in its architecture. It can accommodate up to 10,000 worshipers. ICA/Expat Media
