K9 dogs detect Covid-19 infected at Dubai airport

DUBAI – K9 sniffer dogs are now used to detect passengers infected with Covid-19 at the Dubai airport, making the UAE the first in the world to use canines in its fight against coronavirus.

Specially trained dogs have been dispatched at Dubai International Airport and airports across the country to detect the virus by sniffing swabs gathered from arriving passengers.

Officials said the canines can detect traces of coronavirus with 92 percent accuracy. Heightened senses in dogs help them detect the virus through human scent.

Major Salah Al Mazroooei of Dubai Police said the test is quick and results are out in less than one minute.

The animals are exposed to samples collected from passengers in an isolated room. The dog would sit in front of a sample to indicate possible infection.

“The test was very fast, absolutely easy to do and I was surprised that it was available upon arrival,” a passenger said in a video published by state news agency, WAM.

The police dogs are used as additional defence against coronavirus in the UAE. Currently, passengers arriving from selected countries need to undergo PCR testing at the airport. ICA/Expat Media
