Iconic broadcast journalist Jessica Soho expressed delight on her first long-visit to Dubai, saying that the sheer number of Filipinos here made her feel instantly at home.

“I regret not coming to Dubai sooner because this is usually just a stopover to other destinations. There are so many Filipinos here, it is surprising. It’s just like home. We feel at home here because there are so many Filipinos and this is a wonderful opportunity for us to interact with you,” Soho told Expat Media in an interview on the sidelines of The Global Filipino Icon Awards 2024 at Dusit Thani Dubai on Friday (May 17).

Soho received the Icon of Filipino Media Excellence Award and was the guest of honour at the annual awards, organized by The Global Filipino Magazine, to recognize exemplary Filipinos and businesses in the UAE and the Middle East. The award was handed by The Global Filipino Magazine publisher Gabriel Rimando.

Soho, the host of award-winning show Kapuso Mo Jessica Soho, said she will use her Dubai visit to “listen to the stories of global Filipinos” and retell their stories. She emphasized Filipinos’ “love for family and love for country” wherever they are in the world.

“It is sad that you are away from your family, but on the other hand I think it shows just what it means to be Filipino,” she said in Filipino, adding that Filipinos living and working abroad go through “unimaginable” sacrifices away from their family.

They are doing it “for their future and out of love for their family”, she said, adding, “That’s the wonderful story of every Filipino who is toiling overseas.” ICA/Expat Media
