Indian father, daughter drown in Sharjah

DUBAI – An Indian father and his daughter have drowned in a beach in Sharjah after trying to rescue family members in choppy waters.

Police identified the deceased as Ismayil Thazhe Chandamkandiyil, 47, and Amal Ismayil, 18. The two were on holiday with the rest of their family when tragedy struck.

Chandamkandiyil’s three children and his brother’s two children were struggling in the choppy waters off Al Heera Beach during the November 25 incident.

The father was able to save three of his children and one of his brother’s children, but drowned with his older daughter as they were swept away by strong waves.

Their bodies were found 30 minutes after they drowned at around 4:30pm.

Chandamkandiyil, from Kerala, was in Sharjah on a three-month holiday from work at the Roads and Transport Authority in Dubai.

Following the incident, police reiterated a call to beachgoers to avoid swimming in rough waters and to heed all safety alerts from authorities. ICA/Expat Media
