DUBAI – An Indian couple is on trial for allegedly stealing Dh1.12 million from an insurance company in Dubai.
The woman has been charged with embezzlement, while her husband was charged with aiding and abetting the crime.
At the trial, the Dubai Criminal Court heard that the woman, a 33-year-old insurance consultant, diverted the funds that were supposed to be given as payouts to beneficiaries.
The theft was discovered after customers complained that they were not paid their insurance money.
An internal investigation revealed that the woman diverted the funds into her own bank account between January and May 2017.
An auditor testified that when confronted by evidence, the woman signed a written confession and promised to return to stolen money.
So far she had only returned Dh417,000 as of January, the auditor said. The hearing resumes on August 18. ICA/Expat Media
