A school employee in Dubai has been fined for taking and sharing a photo of a female teacher sleeping in campus, according to a report on Saturday (May 11).

The Dubai Court found the employee guilty of breaching the teacher’s privacy, but gave her a lenient punishment with a fine of Dh2,000.

According to records, the incident happened at a private school in Dubai when a female school administrator took a photo of her colleague sleeping in the teachers’ lounge while on break.

The teacher’s face was visible in the photo, which was forwarded to the school administration via WhatsApp. The teacher filed a complaint of invasion of privacy and sued her colleague, who claimed, in her defense, that she was only doing her job by taking the photo.

In the UAE, invasion of privacy is considered a crime that is punishable with a fine of up to Dh500,000 and a jail term. It is illegal to take, share or publish photos, videos, comments or personal information that can harm or invade someone’s privacy. ICA/Expat Media
