A quick dash across a busy road could cost Dubai pedestrians Dh400, as police launch a new safety campaign urging residents and visitors to use designated crossings and obey traffic signals.
The campaign, launched on Friday (October 23), covers police station jurisdictions across Dubai and aims to reduce accidents by reminding both pedestrians and motorists that safer roads depend on responsible behaviour from everyone.
For pedestrians, the message is straightforward: take the extra time to reach a designated crossing, check for approaching vehicles and follow pedestrian signals rather than risk crossing at an unsafe location.
Brigadier Majid Sultan Al Suwaidi, director of the General Department of Police Stations at Dubai Police, said the initiative forms part of ongoing efforts to improve road safety awareness and prevent accidents. “Road safety is a shared responsibility. Everyone has a role to play in following traffic regulations and helping create safer roads for all,” he said.
The campaign is being conducted by the General Department of Police Stations in cooperation with the General Department of Traffic.
Officers and personnel from police stations across the emirate are visiting areas within their jurisdictions to give pedestrians practical guidance on crossing roads safely.
Motorists are also being reminded to stay alert, reduce speed and give way to pedestrians at designated crossings, particularly in busy and densely populated neighbourhoods where foot traffic can be heavy.
Dubai Police stressed that pedestrians should not assume a road is clear simply because they have reached a crossing. Checking for approaching vehicles and following traffic signals remain essential to avoiding collisions. For drivers, the campaign reinforces the need to watch for people crossing and adjust their speed to road conditions.
When can pedestrians be fined Dh400 in Dubai?
Under Article 89 of the Federal Traffic Law, pedestrians who disregard traffic signals or cross roads at undesignated locations face a Dh400 fine, Brig Al Suwaidi said.
In Dubai, penalties are also much more severe when jaywalking results in an accident. Pedestrians found responsible for causing a traffic accident may face fines of up to Dh10,000, imprisonment, or both. For violations involving roads with speed limits of 80km/h or higher, the minimum penalty is three months’ imprisonment and/or a Dh10,000 fine. ICA/Expat Media
