Seven people were sentenced to jail in Dubai and fined Dh470,00 after they stole the same amount from a saffron trader in the Naif area.
The Dubai Criminal Court sentenced the gang—five Asians and two GCC nationals—to six months in jail followed by deportation. One gang member was sentenced in absentia.
According to records, the gang claimed they were investigators from the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) when they carried out the crime in October 2022.
The Asian victim said four people—including a GCC national—entered his home, claiming they were CID investigators and showed him a green card with the police logo on it. Outside, two people were on lookout, while one was the driver of the getaway vehicle.
They asked him information about his work and where he kept his money. After handing the group the money from his room, they beat him up and detained him in one of the rooms before fleeing the place.
Police were able to track and arrest the GCC national as he tried to escape across the border. Police seized in his possession some of the stolen money.
During interrogation, he admitted to stealing money from the saffron trader, and led police to the location of the other gang members.
