A company founded in Dubai is manufacturing about half the world’s kiteboards and wakeboards, as well as one-third of its snowboards, earning recognition from Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum.

Sheikh Hamdan, Crown Prince of Dubai, Deputy Prime Minister, Minister of Defence and Chairman of The Executive Council of Dubai, named SWS Board Technology the winner of the Dubai-it Award in the Economy category for building a major manufacturing operation serving international snow and water sports brands.

“Who would have imagined that one of the world’s largest snowboard manufacturing operations would emerge from a city that was once desert?” Sheikh Hamdan said.

He noted that the company, founded in Dubai by Rainier Nouhra, has an annual production capacity exceeding 450,000 boards and has sold more than six million products worldwide.

Its boards have reached major international competitions, including the Winter Olympic Games, while its manufacturing capabilities have helped establish Dubai as a base for advanced industrial production in a specialised global market.

Nouhra combined his engineering background with his expertise in composite materials to build the business, investing in research and development, technical skills and production efficiency.

Dubai’s infrastructure, strategic location and logistics networks have supported the company’s expansion into international markets and its partnerships with leading sports brands.

SWS Board Technology has developed an integrated production chain covering research, engineering, manufacturing, quality control and global distribution. It has also introduced recyclable board programmes capable of reusing around 95 per cent of a board’s materials to produce new ones, supporting resource efficiency and circular economy practices.

Mohammad Abdullah Al Gergawi, Chairman of The Executive Office of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, said the award recognises the company’s ability to grow from Dubai into a global manufacturing operation in a field where the region previously had limited presence.

“The Dubai-it Award was launched to show the world Dubai’s philosophy of work, embodied in projects and achievements across every sector,” he said.

The award highlights projects that turn ambitious ideas into practical achievements, reflecting Dubai’s drive to strengthen its position as a global centre for business, industry and innovation. ICA/Expat Media
