Dubai: Chinese Star Restaurant party combos honest review

There’s a reason why the Chinese Star Restaurant in Dubai’s Al Ghurair Centre is always packed, and here’s our honest review.

Chinese Star Restaurant doesn’t disappoint when it comes to ambiance, taste, service and even the huge servings at affordable prices. It definitely gets five stars from us. But don’t just take our word for it

First of all, their Instagrammable ambiance is a feast for the eyes as you head inside through the traditional Chinese arch called paifang and walk under a colourful cloud of Chinese lanterns, paper umbrellas and plum blossoms that adorn the ceiling.

Next, are the flexible seating areas that fit your mood. If you’re feeling sociable, there’s the vibrant food court-type main dining area where you can order from any of the food stations: sushi, grills, hot pots, noodles, Asian desserts, drinks and more. They also have secluded seating areas for groups of four and VIP rooms for groups of 10 or more.

The food? Delish and as authentic as you can get! We spoke with Chinese Star Restaurant’s operations manager, Joanne, who revealed that two of the top reasons why their dishes are packed with so much flavour is because they use authentic, fresh ingredients and each dish is created by experienced Chinese chefs.

Price? This is where it gets even more exciting. After spending Dh143 on some paltry serving of chicken feet, dim sum, rice rolls, egg rolls and two bottles of soda at a nondescript, but overly hyped restaurant in Dubai, we can honestly say we hoped we spent that money on Chinese Star Restaurant instead.

Chinese Star Restaurant really does offer value for money. The best way to get more for your dirham is to get their combo deals starting with the Dh188 Combo A that feeds a minimum of four people. You get a big serving of mixed seafood with crabs, scallops, shrimp, crawfish, mussels and squid; six pieces of hot dragon rolls, half a chicken; chicken fried rice; kangkong with garlic; fried milk with red bean bun; and four servings of plum juice.

If you’re celebrating your birthday, or any special day, we highly recommend the Dh500 treat that is enough to feed a party of 10 to 12 people and includes complimentary use of their VIP room for up to three hours. You can also upgrade to the VIP room with karaoke for a minimum order of Dh1,000 on food and drinks for up to 20 people. Don’t forget to ask for Joanne as she can give you valuable tips on dishes that extend your budget and liven up your party.

The Dh500 Combo A at Chinese Star Restaurant includes a 10-piece sushi platter, 10 vegetable spring rolls, 10 prawn dumplings, a family bowl of hot pot, and family servings of sizzling mixed seafood, chicken dry chili, beef with garlic sprouts, rice noodle with beef, chicken fried rice, plus half a roast duck and unlimited steamed rice. The Combo also includes 12 sesame cake balls for dessert, plus a 1-litre bottle of Pepsi and 2 bottles of 1 litre water. Check it here:

There’s also a Combo B for the same price, which includes a 10-piece sushi platter, 10 chicken fried wonton, 10 chicken siumai, a family bowl of hot pot, and family servings of chicken dry chili, beef with black pepper, mixed seafood with salted egg, barbecue platter (beef, chicken, cuttle fish ball, chicken sausage), kangkong with garlic, mixed fried bihon and chicken fried rice. There’s also unlimited steamed fried rice. The Combo also includes 12 pieces of fried bananas for dessert, plus a 1-litre bottle of Pepsi and 2 bottles of 1 litre water.

If you’re looking for an authentic Chinese treat that won’t burn a hole in your wallet, Chinese Star Restaurant in Al Ghurair Centre won’t disappoint. ICA/Expat Media
