An African woman has been jailed in Dubai for stealing Dh2,000 from her co-worker’s bag.
The Dubai Criminal Court sentenced the woman to three months in jail, and fined her Dh2,000. She will be deported after serving her jail term. Details about the woman’s identity and nationality have been withheld.
The court heard that the African woman worked as a cleaner in the flower shop in Al Qouz where the European victim also worked.
The case dates back to June last year when the European woman reported her colleague to police for theft. The case unfurled after the victim noticed that her handbag was missing, and later found it in another place in the shop.
She said that when she checked the money in her bag, Dh2,000 was missing from the Dh10,000 in cash that she kept there.
The European woman checked surveillance camera footage in the flower shop which captured her African colleague taking money from her handbag and then transferring the bag to another area. The footage was handed over to Dubai Police as evidence.
During interrogation, the African woman admitted to stealing money, adding that she sent it to her home country to pay for her mother’s medical treatment. ICA/Expat Media
