Coronavirus in UAE: 24-hour Dubai curfew, disinfection campaign

DUBAI – The National Disinfection Programme and curfew in Dubai will be extended to 24 hours for two weeks starting at 8pm on Saturday (April 4), authorities announced.

According to the Supreme Committee for Crisis and Disaster Management strict measures will be taken to restrict public and transport movement in the emirate.

The extended campaign in Dubai follows an announcement earlier on Saturday by the Ministry of Health and Prevention and the Ministry of Interior that the National Disinfection Programme will be continued.

Launched on March 26, the campaign was originally extended to April 5 as the country took preventive measures against the coronavirus pandemic.

The UAE ministries did not give a timeline on when it will end, but said it will be “subject to periodic assessment”.

The ministries also said that local authorities in each emirate will be able to implement disinfection plans that will accommodate the requirements of their own facilities and establishments.

Public urged to stay home

They urged the public to cooperate in order to facilitate the work of sanitation teams, and said the public must stay home within the sanitation period “unless absolutely necessary to obtain essential food supplies or medicine or perform essential jobs in vital sectors”.

Authorities will be inspecting the identification cards of anyone caught in public during the curfew period.

Only those working in the following sectors are allowed to go out: Energy, communication, health, education, security, and the police, along with the military, and the postal, freight, pharmaceutical, water, food, civil aviation, airport, passport, finance and banking, government media, and the services sector, which includes gas stations and construction projects.
