Actress Mariam Hussain speaks out on Dubai arrest

DUBAI – Moroccan actress Mariam Hussain has spoken out after she was arrested in Dubai and fined for holding birthday parties during the Covid-19 pandemic.

Hussain posted videos of the parties on Snapchat. Police said she and her guests were seen not wearing a face mask and not practicing social distancing at the two restaurant venues.

Hussain said it was a “mistake” that she allowed her fans to take pictures with her while the restaurant management served her complimentary cake.

“I didn’t intend to violate the precautionary measures. I went for dinner in a restaurant with my mother, a relative and friend. The restaurant management served us a cake out of courtesy. Then, people in the restaurant came to take pictures with me,” the actress claimed.

“I might have made a mistake for allowing my fans to be close with me while taking pictures but I felt embarrassed to say no to them. It won’t happen again in the future,” she added.

Brigadier Jamal Salem Al Jallaf, director of the General Department of Criminal Investigation at the Dubai Police, confirmed that the actress was arrested for violating Covid-19 safety rules.

“She posted videos on her Snapchat account of the crowded party where she and her guests weren’t complying with the social distancing and wearing masks rules,” Al Jallaf said in a statement.

Hussain’s lawyer said that the actress was summoned to a police station and questioned for three hours over the incident.

The actress said she has already paid the Dh10,000 fine for organising gatherings during the pandemic. ICA/Expat Media
