Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan is expected to succeed the throne after the death of UAE President Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan.
The passing of the UAE President on Friday (May 13) has set the course for his powerful younger brother to inherit and oversee the major Middle East oil producer and exporter.
Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed served as Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi before succeeding Sheikh Khalifa as Ruler of Abu Dhabi upon the ruler’s death.
Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed has been the de facto leader of the UAE for several years due to Sheikh Khalifa’s poor health. Sheikh Khalifa had rarely been seen in public since suffering a stroke in 2014.
“The UAE has lost its righteous son and leader of the ’empowerment phase’ and guardian of its blessed journey,” the Crown Prince said on Twitter.
According to the constitution, Vice President and Prime Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, the ruler of Dubai, would temporarily serve as president until the federal council is able to elect a new president within 30 days. BKM/ Expat Media
