DUBAI – An annual vaccination for Covid-19 may be necessary to protect people from new strains of the virus, UAE health authorities said.
This came as new coronavirus variants emerged from Europe, with research suggesting that the mutated virus can evade antibodies.
“The more mutant the virus, the more is the possible need to vaccinate annually against it,” said Dr. Farida Al Hosani, spokeswoman for the UAE’s government health authorities.
Al Hosani made the statement during an online panel discussion on Tuesday amid the UAE’s ongoing public vaccination campaign.
She compared getting an annual Covid-19 vaccine for protection to getting the yearly flu vaccine, which protects against up to four strains of the flu. ICA/Expat Media
