US waitress gets $3,000 tip for $13.25 bill

A restaurant waitress in the US state of Pennsylvania received the biggest tip of her life after a generous customer with a bill of just over $13 tipped her $3,000.

Mariana Lambert said she was working a shift at Alfredo’s Pizza Café when a man came in and ordered a stromboli meal worth $13.25 but left her with the tip of $3,000.

Lambert was initially skeptical about whether the tip was real or not. “We ran his card, and everything went through. We took his ID and took pictures of everything. They waited a little bit to make sure it was legit and went through, and it ended up being real,” Lambert said.

It turns out the customer, identified as Eric Smith, was taking part in a social media trend called “Tips for Jesus”. Smith travels to different places to reward people with generous tips. Restaurant manager Matt Martini said he spoke to Smith about the tip, and that the customer confirmed that he knew what he was doing.

Employees at Alfredo’s Pizza Café praised the random act of kindness by a stranger, saying it came at a time when everyone was struggling with the economic effects of the pandemic.

Meanwhile Lambert said she will use the money to pay some bills and take her family on a vacation. “The amount means a lot to me, because I was going through a financial distress,” she said. ICA/Expat Media
