The UAE has a total of 14 public holidays per year, with each holiday applicable to both the private sector and public sector.

But what if you need to work during an official holiday? What are your rights under the UAE labour law?

Under the Federal Decree Law, employees are entitled to official days off with full pay on public holidays, which are defined by a resolution of the Cabinet.

If it is absolutely necessary for an employee to work during public holidays, then he or she will be compensated with another rest day for each day on which he or she worked during the holiday period.

The employee can also be paid an equivalent of a regular day’s salary plus an increase of not less than 50 percent of his or her basic daily wage for that day. ICA/Expat Media
