UAE law: Keeping lost property could get you a Dh20,000 fine, 2 years in jail

UAE authorities remind residents that keeping lost property can get them fined and jailed.

Finder of any lost or abandoned property must submit such properties or money to the police within 48 hours and may not act ownership on them; violation of such action is subject to criminal liability.

Under article 454 of the Federal Decree-Law No. 31 of 2021, an individual may be subject to a fine of not less than Dh20,000 or a sentence of not more than two years in jail for the offense.

In a recent social media post, Public Prosecution reiterated that whoever takes over lost property that came to his possession by accident or force majeure shall be subject to crimes & penalties law. BKM/ Expat Media
