UAE: Get job loss insurance by June 30 or pay Dh400 fine

All employees in the UAE must get a job loss insurance by June 30 or get fined Dh400, according to the Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation (MOHRE).

MOHRE also expanded the mandatory job loss insurance scheme to cover employees working in free zones and those working in semi-government entities. These employees can subscribe to the scheme on the website under the “Non-Registered in MOHRE” link.

The job loss insurance scheme ensures that employees who lose their jobs will get cash coverage for three months, equivalent to 60 percent of their average basic salary.

The mandatory job loss insurance was implemented on January 1, but authorities extended the deadline to June 30 to give employees time to subscribe to the insurance scheme.

Job loss insurance is mandatory for all employees in the UAE working in the private sector and well as federal government.

Aside from the Dh400 fine for late subscribers, workers will also be penalized with Dh200 if they fail to pay the insurance premiums for more than three months from the due date.

Under the job loss insurance scheme, employees with a basic salary of Dh16,000 or less will pay an insurance premium of Dh5 per month or Dh60 per year. For those with a basic salary of more than Dh16,000, the premium is Dh10 per month or Dh120 per year.
