UAE work permits are now valid for three years instead of two years after the Federal National Council (FNC) approved the extension of work permit validity.
The move came after an FNC committee recommended extending the work permit validity to reduce the financial costs of getting a work permit.
The 3-year work permits are expected to take effect on new work permit applications and renewals.
Work permits are issued by the Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation (MOHRE). It is illegal to work in the UAE without a valid permit. Violators face a fine and deportation, while companies hiring workers without a valid permit will be fined, and new requests for work permits will be suspended.
MoHRE issues 12 types of work permits that allow registered establishments to recruit employees, depending on the nature of the job.
The common work permits are residence visa holder work permit, freelance work permit, temporary work permit and part-time work permit. ICA/Expat Media
