American tennis superstar wants retired tennis great ‘to leave her out of his statements’

FLORIDA – Serena Williams hit back at retired tennis superstar John McEnroe after the latter said she would be ranked “no. 700” if she were to play in the men’s tour.

Williams tweeted: “Dear John, I adore and respect you but please please keep me out of your statements that are not factually based. I’ve never played anyone ranked ‘there’ nor do I have time. Respect me and my privacy as I’m trying to have a baby. Good day sir”.

Williams is on hiatus from the sport until next year because she is pregnant. She is engaged to Reddit co-founder Alexis Ohanian.

McEnroe said in an interview on Sunday with NPR during a promotional tour of his latest book “But Seriously” that while Williams is the greatest woman to ever play tennis, she is not at par with male players.

He pointed that though that his statement doesn’t mean he “doesn’t think Serena is an incredible player.”

I do, but the reality of what would happen on a given day is Serena could beat some players, I believe, because she is so incredibly strong mentally. But if she had to just play the circuit — the men’s circuit — that would be an entirely different story.”

McEnroe also said a female tennis player could be better than anybody someday. “I just haven’t seen it in any other sport, and I haven’t seen it in tennis. I suppose anything’s possible at some stage,” he said.

Williams’ tennis career achievements include the distinction of being the oldest woman to win a Grand Slam title, surpassing Martina Navratilova and her Wimbledon title in 1990; 23 singles Grand Slams and 14 more in doubles. GAC/Expat Media
