CALIFORNIA – Serena Williams is no longer be the world’s number one female tennis player as she won’t be playing in the BNP Paribas Open in Indian Wells, California due to a knee injury.
Second-ranked Angelique Kerber, who Serena ousted as the number one woman tennis player after winning the Australian Open last January, returns to the top spot without any sweat.
Aside from the Indian Wells tourney, Williams will not be playing in Miami.
Williams, 35, took over from Kerber as number one female tennis player after wining in the Australian Open last January.
Willians announced she is pulling out of Indian Wells and Miami because of a left knee injury, which afflicted her in the US Open last year.
“I have not been able to train due to my knees and am disappointed I cannot be there. I will keep moving forward and continue to be positive. I look forward to being back as soon as I can,” said Williams in a statement. GAC/Expat Media
