Scammers target Dubizzle users with SMS

DUBAI – Users of Dubizzle were the recent target of scammers, with the classifieds listings portal issuing an alert to users about a phishing attempt.

“We have become aware of ongoing phishing attempts targeting sellers on Dubizzle. Please rest assured that we are investigating this issue right now,” Dubizzle said in an email.

Users with an active classifieds listing on Dubizzle have received an SMS from random numbers asking to confirm a Dubizzle delivery. The SMS included a hyperlink.

“Please do not click on this link or follow any of the instructions. This is a phishing attempt,” Dubizzle warned.

The scam SMS informs the seller that a buyer has made a payment for the item they are selling and then asks for credit card details in order to deposit the money.

“We currently do not take payments on your behalf from buyers. The only thing you will pay for on Dubizzle is for listings or premium products., and you’ll make those payments during the listing process. Additionally, we never ask you to download anything outside of the official Google and Apple app stores,” Dubizzle said.

A user told Expatmedia.net that she received a similar SMS for an item she posted on the site on Sunday.

“The SMS was from a local mobile number saying they ordered delivery of an item I posted on the site and that I needed to confirm acceptance of the order. I was surprised because I didn’t know this was possible on Dubizzle. Luckily, I ignored it because I already sold the item but just forgot to delete the listing,” she told Expatmedia.net.

Dubizzle said it will keep customers updated in case they need to take further action. ICA/Expat Media
