SOOTHING echoes of waves crashing on the beach, a sea of water gypsies—from tots to grans—the golden sun seething on my skin balanced off with winds gusting through the dancing branches of date trees and that strong aroma curling up from the grill. A welcome so extraordinary, I knew I was off to an afternoon of superlatives.

The grills

Even before my dining partner and I gave our names, the lady by the entrance of Seagrill at 25 greeted us warmly with excitement in the tone of her voice. We were promptly ushered to our seats as if they were awaiting our arrival for ages. A non-complicated menu of their renowned Beach BBQ Brunch was handed to us clipped onto a wooden board. Then we were offered a glass of water. “Still or sparkling?” the attendant asked. I appreciated his anticipating gesture of quenching our thirsts. “Sparkling please, thank you,” I said, and off he went to get it for us.

Upon his return, he walked us through the menu, which includes a set of starters, appetizers, and desserts and asked for our preferred main dish, all enough to be shared by two. It was a tough choice between mix meat grill, whole lamb shank slow cooked with rosemary and garlic, red snapper 800-1000 grams and the mix seafood grill. “What do you recommend?” Without hesitation he uttered, “Mix seafood grill, madame.” “Yes, we’ll have that please.” We were leisurely bathing in the vapours of grill not to give in anyway.

The thrills

Shortly after we placed our orders came three attendants carrying our pineapple juices, starters and appetizers which include taramasalata, dolmadakia, white anchovies, marinated octopus, marinated olives, smoked eggplant mousseline, a platter of bread, five kinds of salads – greens with tomato and cucumber, couscous, nicoise, coleslaw and beetroot.

Midway our bountiful starters and appetizers, we requested to be seated inside before they serve our main course. Caleb—the convivial attendant who constantly looked after us—was gracious enough to move us inside. Turns out, hot appetizers are up next before they serve the main dishes. We were then served with two hot dishes: A hefty bowl of mussels bloody mary and a plate of shrimp saganaki which was faultlessly seasoned with tomato, pepper, onion and feta cheese.

Now the principals have arrived, the mix seafood grill. The jewels of the sea consisting of monkfish, shrimp, octopus, squid and scallops skewered and grilled to perfection, served with grilled vegetables, garlic aiolo and spicy tomato sauce. Each one was a magical mouthful.

Now to cap off the thrills of this ensemble is the sweet depths of classic tiramisu gateaux, lemon thyme ice cream, cherry chocolate moelleux, sable breton, and orange curd flexi chocolate ganache with olive oil and berries. Divine.

The frills

As I enjoy my cup of green tea, I cannot help but notice my surroundings. Champagne-colored sand and coral-blue water. Crowded, yes. But it was a cheery crowd, with a splash of shades from the kid’s flamboyant floaters and the adults’ sunspecs, bikinis and pinacoladas. The sun gleams so brightly on the spectrum, it seemed like a festival of colorful lights.

From the flashing smiles of the service staff and natural strobe skylights, friendly echoes of casual chats from table to table and of splattering water with every tiny footstep, to the scented smokes of flavoured shisha and barbecue combined, to say it was an afternoon of superlatives may be an understatement.
