Ramadan 2022 rules for Dubai restaurants, cafes in malls

DUBAI – Restaurants and cafes located inside shopping malls and commercial spaces in Dubai will have to adhere to new rules during Ramadan.

The Department of Economy and Tourism announced the new rules on Monday (March 28), which must be followed by all food and beverage operators in Dubai.

Under the new rules, restaurants and cafes with both indoor and outdoor dining spaces are only allowed to serve customers in their indoor seating area.

Restaurants and cafes with only outdoor dining spaces can serve food in their outdoor area.

For restaurants and cafes in food courts, standard operating procedure applies. Restaurants and cafes will not need to apply for a permit in order to serve food during Ramadan.

The first day of Ramadan is expected to fall on April 2. The UAE moon sighting committee is expected to make an official announcement on April 1.

In 2021, Dubai and Abu Dhabi authorities for the first time allowed diners at restaurants and food establishments to eat in the open during fasting hours throughout Ramadan.

The Department of Economic Development announced that restaurants and food courts do not need to put up screens or curtains to serve customers during Ramadan fasting hours. ICA/Expat Media
