Philippines: President Marcos Jr. appoints new FDA Director General

As of Wednesday (August 3), Dr. Samuel Zacate, the personal physician of President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr., has been appointed director of the Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

During a press conference at the palace, Press Secretary Trixie Cruz-Angeles made the announcement of Zacate’s appointment.

With years of experience in medicine and medical consulting, Zacate is a well-known proponent of public health.

Cruz-Angeles said that the new FDA director is qualified for the position.

“If you will look at his qualifications he is eminently qualified. As you know, to be the FDA head, you have to at least be a doctor or a pharmacist so he is qualified plus he has several distinctions,” she said.

Zacate will replace Dr. Oscar Gutierrez, the FDA’s officer-in-charge, who took over the organization following the retirement of Dr. Eric Domingo. BKM/ Expat Media
