DUBAI – A Pakistani doctor in Abu Dhabi died of Covid-19 after getting infected by a patient he was treating, Pakistan’s ambassador to the UAE said.
Dr. Mohammed Usman died on Friday after being treated at the hospital for 10 days. He was put on ventilator the day he died.
Dr. Usman is survived by his wife and their two children. The family is expected to return to Pakistan.
According to Pakistan Ambassador to the UAE Ghulam Dastgir, Dr. Usman was buried in the UAE on Monday. Dr. Usman’s family had wanted to take his body home.
Dr. Usman had lived in the UAE in the last 12 years.
Dr. Usman’s friend, Dr. Jamshed Khan, told Khaleej Times that the late doctor faced “financial challenges” after the hospital where he worked reported business losses.
Dr. Khan said that Dr. Usman left the hospital to join a clinic where the latter got infected with coronavirus from a patient.
Other frontliners have succumbed to coronavirus in the UAE. In April, a Filipino nurse in Sharjah died of Covid-19 after working in the intensive care unit of a hospital in the emirate.
Marlon Jimenea, 44, was believed to be the first Filipino frontliner to die of Covid-19 in the UAE.
In May, Abu Dhabi-based Filipino nurse Janette Alano also died of coronavirus.
In a post on Facebook, the Philippine Nurses Association-UAE described Alano as a hero who had “given her life to something bigger than oneself”.
Also in May, a Filipino volunteer who worked with social organisations and the Dubai Police to assist Filipinos in distress died of Covid-19,colleagues confirmed to Expatmedia.net.
