New UAE unemployment insurance: Jobless residents to get 60% of basic salary each month

DUBAI – UAE residents who lost their jobs will receive 60 percent of their basic salary each month under a new UAE unemployment insurance scheme, a UAE official said.

The UAE Minister of Human Resources and Emiratisation Dr Abdulrahman Al Awar said that all workers in the private and public sectors can avail of the unemployment insurance scheme.

The unemployment insurance scheme will take effect in January 2023 and will support unemployed people searching for work.

Under the insurance scheme, expat and Emirati workers will pay a minimum of Dh100 per year for insurance coverage that guarantees cash support of 60 percent of their basic salary up to Dh20,000 each month for a limited period in the event that they lose their job.

Al Awar said that residents have the option to pay for a higher unemployment insurance package.

The unemployment insurance scheme was announced in a UAE Cabinet meeting on May 9, chaired by Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai. ICA/Expat Media
