Dubai: What Ruffa Gutierrez thinks of Imelda Marcos

Ruffa Gutierrez was in Dubai recently to promote her latest movie, Martyr or Murderer, telling Expatmedia.net that she is happy to reprise her role as Imelda Marcos.

“Martyr or Murderer,” which is now showing in UAE cinemas, is the second installment of the top-grossing movie “Maid in Malacañang”. Ruffa revealed to Expatmedia.net that they will soon be shooting the third installment, “Mabuhay Aloha Mabuhay”.

Ruffa said that Imelda chose her to play the role. She also revealed that shooting the movie gave her a lot of insights about the life and character of the former Philippine First Lady.

“Imelda is iconic, that’s why she’s called the Steel Butterfly of the world. She knows how to act under pressure. She’s very strong,” Ruffa told Expatmedia.net in an exclusive interview.

“You can’t withstand all that pain, all the tragic memories of being portrayed as monsters, as Direk Darryl (Yap) said, if you don’t have a strong heart,” she added.

The actress revealed that Imelda is her a friend of her parents, and that her father campaigned for Ferdinand Marcos in his younger days.

“I met [Imelda] for the first time when I was 18 at The Manila Hotel and she would always come to our parties after,” Ruffa said. She remembers Imelda’s many talents, including her love for music and the arts. “I wish I could sing like her because I don’t know how to sing,” Ruffa said.

The actress also praised Imelda for supporting the local industry. Imelda was known to commission Filipino artists and designers for her dresses, shoes and more.

Speaking of shoes, we also asked Ruffa what she thought of Imelda’s infamous collection of 3,000 pairs of shoes.

“You know what? Three thousand shoes, is that a lot nowadays? I know a lot of people who are wealthy who have more than 3,000 pairs of shoes,” Ruffa said.

“When I saw her shoes when we were shooting Maid in Malacanang, a lot of them were locally made from Marikina. So it’s not just designer [shoes] that we’re accustomed to like YSL, Givenchy, Louis Vuitton,” the actress revealed.

The actress said she is excited to portray Imelda again in the third installment of the movie. “We’re going to start shooting soon,” she said. ICA/Expat Media
